This headset will help you understand how your
brain works. The Insight, a new device
from San Francisco based bioinformatics company Emotiv
Lifesciences, measures your cognitive performance according to a variety of
metrics -- focus, attention, excitement, affinity, stress, relaxation, interest
and engagement -- and lets you access the data on your smartphone or computer.
"These metrics help to build a productivity
profile," says Tan Le, Emotiv's CEO and cofounder. "So you'll start
to know that, between nine and noon, say, you can focus and pay attention, and
are super engaged with your work. If you're really good at paying attention at
those times, maybe you should be up trying to learn new things during
those periods, rather than doing monotonous things."
The Insight's five electroencephalography ( EEG)
sensors, placed in areas around the cerebral cortex, measure the electrical
activity occurring in different regions of the brain. The Insight turns this
data into cognitive metrics using an algorithm created by monitoring the brain
activity of volunteers experiencing specific emotions.
The Insight reached its $100,000 (£73,000) target
within two hours of launching its Kickstarter in July. (It has raised $1.6
million [£977,000] in total.) Le says the goal for the $199 (£121)
product when it's released in April 2014 is to grow the community of
users. "It takes three months to collect data from 100 people because you
have them come to your lab. But if you crowdsource this with our
platform you could get 1,000 overnight."
