<strong>How we tested</strong><br />
We assessed these simplified mobile phones for usability, capability,
performance, style and value for money. We also enlisted a group of Chelsea
Pensioners, some of whom were seasoned mobile users, some less so, for their
opinions on the handsets specifically tailored to the seniors' market.<br />

You can make calls and send texts with the 105, but not much else - though its
battery will last for around a month on standby, and about a week under regular
use. Extras include an FM radio, a few games (including Snake) and a torch. The
low cost, plus its dust and splash-resistant shell, also makes this ideal as a
semi-disposable for festivals and the like.<br />

</b>At 11mm thick, it's a little chubby for a smartphone, but it feels very
sturdy and reliable. The Y300 runs Huawei's Experience interface, which
simplifies Android for its four-inch touchscreen. The dual-core processor is
better than you'd expect at this price, and there's a five-megapixel camera on
the back, a VGA one on the front, and an FM radio, too.<br />

user already - felt that there was "a bit too much on it".<br />

Of all the handsets in our test, the Stylistic most resembles a standard
smartphone. The screen takes some getting used to, as you need to press hard
enough to receive a little buzz of tactile feedback - useful for avoiding
accidental presses. It has full access to email, the internet and Google Play,
and has the best camera out of the group, at eight megapixels.<br />

This dinky Android smartphone has a low-resolution 3.5-inch screen and a
single-core processor clocked at 1GHz, and is a shrunken version of the
Vodafone Smart. The lack of power is noticeable next to the Huawei Y300, but as
a no-frills handset that gives you SMS, phone, internet and social-networking
in a 118g package for £50, it's a tempting proposition.<br />

International Space Station gets urgent repairs

Astronauts on the ISS have <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-25477541">finished</a> the
first of potentially three spacewalks necessary to replace a pump containing a
faulty valve.</div>

Half of the station's cooling system has been
shut down for a week after detecting abnormal temperatures. All non-essential
equipment has been turned off until the problem can be repaired.</div>

The six-hour long spacewalk was conducted by US
astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Mike Hopkins, who removed a fridge-sized
ammonia pump that was faulty. At one point, a connector began to float away
from the station, but Mastracchio was able to recover it.</div>
<div class="adavoidedbutflowable">
A new pump will be installed on 24 December,
however if the problem remains then a third spacewalk may be necessary.</div>
The repairs have been prioritised over the launch of a supply ship to bring
new equipment to the station and carry away its trash. That will now happen in
January.<br />

However, Nasa also played down the urgency of the
mission, saying the situation was potentially serious but not life-threatening.</div>

Adorable, <a href="http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2013-11/06/kirobo-space-robot">robotic
astronaut pal Kirobo</a> has enjoyed his first face-to-face, in-space
conversation with Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata, who is testing out the
little bot's autonomous conversation skills.</div>

Kirobo is the first humanoid robot to go into
space and instead of giving pre-programmed responses to questions he processes
them and constructs the answers from a pool of vocabulary.</div>

In a video showing the interaction between the
two, Wakata can be seen saying: "I've been looking forward to meeting you,
Kirobo, for such a long time."</div>

"Me too, I've always wanted to meet
you," replies Kirobo, who set off for the International Space Station in
August, where he waited for Wakata, who then arrived in November.</div>
Conversation was a little stilted, with pauses in between questions and
answers, but the robot's conversation improves and gets smoother all the time.<br />
"We've had some trouble before having the robot carry on the
conversation smoothly," <a href="https://news.google.com/news?ncl=ddCD869pKk4zBjM7j7qA20hbEEF3M&q=kirobo&lr=English&hl=en&sa=X&ei=Rm60Upz9LIWshQfr0IHACQ&ved=0CDkQqgIwAA"><em><span style="text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">AFP </span></em> reports</a> Kirobo's developer
Tomotaka Takahashi as saying.<br />
"When people develop a relationship, it is an accumulation of small
bits of communication. Small things make it work or not work," he said.
"We've learnt important tips to develop a robot that can communicate with
people more."<br />
Kirobo also told Wakata that he's enjoying zero gravity and that he's going
to ask Santa for a rocket for Christmas, presumably so he can go explore
further afield.<br />
"What kind of training have you done?" Wakata asks Kirobo.<br />
"I was trained to talk to people," answers the robot.<br />
Kirobo might know what he's doing, but it's doubtful that he knows why he's
doing it. He has no idea that the experiment is being conducted in the hope of
facilitating the coexistence of humans and robots in the future, and maybe
even deploying communication robots in outer space.<br />

He was designed though as a companion for
isolated people, and is the product of a collaborative project between
advertising firm Dentsu, the University of Tokyo, robot developer Robo Garage
and Toyota. Kirobo is scheduled to return to Earth in December 2014, so let's
hope he and Wakata continue to be chums.</div>

Absolutely shocking: electrocuting brain can wipe unpleasant memories

Neuroscience</i></a> claims that with a few electroshock therapy (ECT) induced
seizures, your brain can be wiped of the offending memory. <a href="http://www.ru.nl/people/donders/kroes-m/">Marijn Kroes</a> and his team
of neuroscientists at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands,
discovered that strategically timed electric shocks to the brain can
effectively destroy thoughts of unpleasant moments in your past.</div>

Kroes' discovery relies on the theory of memory
consolidation, which suggests that memories are plucked from a mental warehouse
whenever they are accessed and re-written over time back onto the brain's
circuits. It is thought, after studying results from tests made on animals and
humans, that whilst the brain is in the process of reconsolidating, memories
can become vulnerable to destruction.</div>
42 patients suffering from severe depression and already undergoing ECT were
Kores' test subjects. He showed them two slides, one depicting a car accident
and another depicting an assault. Later, the team requested the patients recall
one of the slides, which began the "re-writing" process, it is at
this moment that their brains were electrocuted. A day later, patients were
unable to answer questions relating to the slide they had thought of during the
ECT process but were able to recall with clarity the slide they did not think
of.<br />
<a href="http://neuroscience.mssm.edu/schiller/">Daniela Schiller</a>, a neuroscientist
at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York said: "this provides very strong and
compelling evidence that memories in the human brain undergo reconsolidation,
and that a window of opportunity exists to treat bad memories." However,
she feels more work is needed to establish how long the effects last and
whether this method will work on older, more ingrained memories.<br />

Kores acknowledges that ECT may not be suitable
for most patients, but hopes that results from these tests will aid the
discovery of new and less invasive methods of altering memory reconsolidation.
He hopes that the process can eventually help those suffering from depression,
post-traumatic stress disorder or addiction.</div>

Android 4.3 announced, bringing incremental changes to Jelly Bean

Google finally unveiled Android 4.3 at today's
breakfast event with Android and Chrome head Sundar Pichai. Still dubbed Jelly
Bean, this update follows in the footsteps of versions 4.1 and 4.2: it
introduces a couple of major features and a handful of smaller ones without
drastically altering the Android experience introduced back in version 4.0.</div>

Heading the charge is official support for
Bluetooth Low Energy, part of the now-supported Bluetooth 4.0 specification.
Android OEMs have long been able to add Bluetooth 4.0 support to their own
Android builds for their phones, but this is the first time that support has
been incorporated into the core of Android. This means Nexus devices that
receive the Android 4.3 update and have capable hardware will finally be able
to support Bluetooth 4.0, and that OEMs using Android will have to do less work
to offer the feature in their own devices.</div>
The new operating system will also feature multi-user restricted profiles.
This will let users control access to contents and apps per user -- so parents,
for example, can control which applications their kids can access. When
accessed from restricted profiles, applications behave differently. On stage,
Hugo Barra demonstrated this by showing a puzzle game whose in-app purchase
functionality was automatically disabled when it was accessed on the kids'
restricted profile.<br />

Additionally, the new operating system supports the <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>OpenGL ES 3.0 extensions, up from the previous
OpenGL ES 2.0. Barra mentioned that Android would be the first mobile platform
to officially support the new API extensions.<br />
ROM leaks for devices like the Nexus 4 and Google Play edition Samsung
Galaxy S4 have given us additional insight into minor improvements like those
made to the phone dialler, which can now auto-complete numbers from your
contacts list. There's reportedly a full emoji keyboard, a must for when your
thoughts and feelings are more easily expressed by tiny pictures than words.
Other early reports have also mentioned improved performance and boosted active
and standby battery life, though we'll have to test this ourselves to be sure.<br />
Android 4.2's camera interface has been swapped out for a new version,
identical to what we've seen in Google Play edition phones like the Galaxy S4
and HTC One. Where Android 4.2 arranged its camera settings in a circle,
Android 4.3 arranges them in an arc that you navigate by dragging your finger
through it. Assuming it doesn't make any changes to the version from the Google
Play phones, this new interface is more of a step sideways than an upgrade from
the old one. It doesn't introduce new features or even make the old ones much
